Special Education Operations, ESY

Extended School Year (ESY)
Extended School Year (ESY) services are designed to support students with disabilities who require continued instruction beyond the regular academic year to maintain critical skills and prevent regression. ESY is not intended to teach new skills but to sustain progress on existing IEP goals. Eligibility is determined annually by the IEP team based on individual student needs. LAUSD’s ESY programs offer tailored instruction, related services, and transportation as needed, ensuring students continue to thrive during summer months.

ESY programs are offered at designated school sites across the district and staffed by qualified special education professionals. These programs are structured to provide consistency in instructional routines and access to necessary supports, including assistive technology and behavioral services. The Division of Special Education Operations works closely with families, school teams, and transportation services to ensure that ESY is accessible, responsive, and aligned with each student’s IEP. By maintaining educational momentum, ESY helps students with disabilities stay on track for long-term success.
