Psychological Services
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Psychological Services Department is an integral component of the Division of Special Education. The department is comprised of highly trained school psychologists who are dedicated to promoting student success and well-being. Psychological services are provided districtwide, supporting students from preschool through age 21. All practices are grounded in evidence-based methodologies and informed by expertise in both educational systems and psychological development.
LAUSD school psychologists uphold the belief in the transformative power of education to inspire, empower, and support the growth and wellness of all learners, families, and school communities. Through their specialized training in psychology and education, they collaborate with educators, families, and multidisciplinary teams to establish safe, healthy, and inclusive learning environments.
Serving a diverse student population, school psychologists address academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs through direct services, consultation, and assessment. They play a key role in special education evaluations, crisis response, mental health supports, and the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The overarching mission of the department is to ensure equitable access to education and to provide all students with the opportunity to thrive.
Focus Areas
- Promote Safe and Supportive Schools
School Psychologists play an integral role in maximizing students' educational success as they participate in prevention and intervention activities by promoting pre-referral intervention supports and assisting with progress monitoring. In addition, School Psychologists collaborate with other stakeholders to promote preventative and responsive services that enhance learning, mental and behavioral health, and psychological and physical safety, and implement effective crisis prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery. - Consultation and Collaboration
School Psychologists provide parent consultation and facilitate family and school partnerships and interactions with community agencies to enhance academic and social-behavioral outcomes for students. Additionally, School Psychologists provide professional development opportunities for teachers, staff, parents, and community members on a variety of topics, which may include pre-referral interventions, strategies for behavior modification, promoting wellness and resilience, anti-bullying programs, and working with all learners. - School-Wide Practices to Support Learning
In an effort to support a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) process to close opportunity gaps and improve student achievement, School Psychologists participate in prevention and intervention activities through the Student Support and Progress Team (SSPT) by promoting pre-referral intervention supports and assisting with progress monitoring. School Psychologists also support with consultation on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports and Restorative Practices to promote a positive school climate conducive to learning. - Assessments
School Psychologists conduct psycho-educational assessments in relation to a student's cultural, environmental, and language background and participate in Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings to interpret findings of individual case studies to principals, teachers, parents, students, and all stakeholders. During IEP meetings, School Psychologists assist the IEP team in determining eligibility for special education services, discuss appropriate educational placement and supports, as needed.
