Special Education Instruction: IDEC

The IDEC Mission
IDEC will provide high quality evidence-based tier III reading intervention to students with dyslexia so that they can access their content area instruction, enjoy improved academic outcomes and fulfill their potential as learners and intellectuals.
The IDEC Model
IDEC is located at 27 sites across the district and serves approximately 800 students. Through extensive professional development and coaching support, our teachers and paraprofessionals are equipped with the resources and expertise to address the needs of our district’s most impacted readers. These students require extended doses of highly structured tier III intervention that may extend beyond the scope of what many school sites are able to provide.
The IDEC instructional team works with students in small groups employing a diagnostic, explicit and systematic structured literacy approach. IDEC students attend intervention 4-5 days of the week from 60 to 120 minutes. They undergo regular progress monitoring to ensure the efficacy of the intervention being provided. Students may remain in the program for several semesters as they develop decoding skills, build reading fluency and receive support in utilizing the assistive technology that may be required to address ongoing difficulties accessing grade level reading materials.
IDEC Candidates
IDEC candidates have specific learning disabilities and exhibit one or more of the following characteristics of dyslexia:
- Difficulty decoding words
- Difficulty spelling words
- Poor oral reading fluency
- Difficulty with phonemic awareness tasks
- Difficulty with grade level reading and writing tasks
