Special Education Compliance: Oral Interpretation at IEP Meetings
In recognition of the need to ensure meaningful participation by parents and guardians who speak little or no English at IEP team meetings, the Division of Special Education developed the Oral Interpretation at IEP Team Meetings Training, commonly referred to as OIT, for bilingual school-site staff. The school principal will designate bilingual staff to provide oral interpretation at IEP team and Section 504 meetings.

The OIT and OIT Recertification sessions are designed to equip bilingual staff designated by the school-site administrator with the interpretation skills needed to support families during IEP team and Section 504 meetings. These training sessions are offered in the fall and spring across all regions. Independent charter school participants may attend any session within the four regions but must register using the appropriate electronic form rather than MyPLN. Click here for the registration link for independent charter schools.

The Oral Interpretation Training at IEP Team Meetings (OIT) is an all-day, in-person training. Participants become familiar with different modes of interpreting; engage in rigorous practice to strengthen their interpretation skills and knowledge of special education terminology; learn about the components of an IEP document; and receive tips and strategies for what to do before, during, and after an IEP team meeting. Participants must obtain administrator approval before attending and complete both parts of the training to earn a certificate of completion and meet the eligibility requirements for recertification the following year.

OIT Recertification is a two-hour synchronous session dedicated to reviewing various interpreting modalities and strengthening oral interpretation skills through rigorous role-playing activities. These activities help participants deepen their understanding of their role as interpreters during IEP team meetings. To attend this year’s recertification training, participants must register and must have completed the initial full-day OIT during the previous school year.

Note: All participants must attend the entire session to receive full certification credit. District attendees must register through MyPLN. Independent charter school participants must register using the charter schools’ link: https://bit.ly/CHARTER-OIT-REGISTRATION

*Please note that independent charter school participants who register through MyPLN will be dropped from the session.
