Assistive Technology (AT)
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Assistive Technology (AT) program provides devices and services to students with disabilities to help them access the curriculum and participate in school. This support is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and California law.
Focus Areas
  • Academic Supports
The focus of Assistive Technology is to consider tools that aim to bridge the gap between the functional performance of a student and the academic demands of the curriculum. Providing accessibility ensures compliance with IDEA, California Ed Code, and District policy.
  • Language and Speech - Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Support
AAC centers on the use of technology to support students with complex communication needs and is provided through the Language and Speech Program. Services include a continuum of communication tools, from light-tech to high-tech options.
  • Deaf Education Support
The Deaf Education Program serves eligible students with documented hearing differences that may impact their language, communication skills, and access to the core curriculum. Assistive technology for deaf education may include assistive listening devices, hearing technology, captioning, etc.
  • Blind and Low Vision Support
The Blind Low Vision program offers assistive technologies for students who are legally blind or partially sighted. These tools and devices support access to information, learning, and independence. Technologies range from low-tech to high-tech and are selected based on individual student needs. Examples include braille materials and devices, screen readers and screen-magnification software, audio books and text-to-speech tools, tactile graphics, and accessible instructional materials.
